Guides for getting started with Simplist and getting more out of it.
Get started
Getting started
Simplist lets you design your own record types and then fill them in. This guide takes you from a new account to your first few records.
Models and fields
A model is a record type you design; a field is one typed slot on it. Getting the fields right is most of the work, so Simplist makes them easy to change later.
Child models and option lists
Some models exist only to serve another one: the film stocks a Movie is shot on, the countries a Client can be in. Simplist lets you keep those lookup lists out of the way, either as child models grouped under the model they belong to, or as nested options hidden inside a single field.
Working with documents
A document is one record of a model. This is what you can do with them once they exist: edit together, look at earlier versions, duplicate, and recover the ones you delete.
Use Simplist with Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants
Simplist is a remote MCP server, so an AI assistant can keep structured records for you: it can design models, file and update documents, search what you have saved, and manage your media library. You connect it once with a URL and approve it in your browser. No API key or install is needed.
Find and organize
Views and search
Every model's document list has five layouts, and a filter language that saves. This is how you get from "everything" to the handful of records you actually wanted.
Files and media
Files live alongside your records rather than in a separate drive. Anything you attach to a document also shows up in the workspace's media library, where it can carry fields of its own.
The activity log
The Activity page is a workspace-wide timeline of who created, edited, deleted and restored what. It is the quickest way to answer "what happened here?" when a shared workspace surprises you.
Share and publish
Sharing and publishing
There are four ways to let someone else see your work, from inviting a colleague into the workspace to publishing a public site. Each is a separate opt-in, and none is on by default.
Public model pages
Any model can be published as a set of read-only web pages that anyone with the link can open, with no account and no sign-in. This is sometimes called a public view of the model: a listing of its documents, plus one page per document.
Your data
Import, export and backups
Your data is yours and it leaves in a readable shape. There are four mechanisms: a manual export, an import, a check that proves an export restores, and scheduled backups to a git repository or a storage bucket you own. The Your data section of the Data page shows the state of all of them, and everything that can leave the server.
The export format
An export is a zip you can use without Simplist. This page documents it field by field, so that a script, another tool, or a person years from now can get everything out of one.
Integrations and automation
Simplist is usable from a script, from an AI agent, and offline on your phone — and it can pull data in on a schedule without you doing anything. All four use the same records you already have.
